WOOD AND DERIVATIVES PROTECTION BY NOVEL BIO-COATING SOLUTIONS
ERA-IB-16-040 : PROJECT ACRONYM: PROWOOD

Scientific objectives: The central objective of ProWood is to generate innovative, economically feasible and ecologically friendly bio-coatings to protect wood and wood derivatives against decay (figure 1). The project aims to develop wood protective bio-coatings based on sol-gel, functionalized vegetable oils and alkyd coatings suitable for incorporation of decay preventing microorganisms, biological compounds or enzymes (fillers).

Specific objectives:
Develop advanced bio-coatings based on sol-gel, functionalized vegetable oils or alkyd coatings.
Omics meta-analysis for the identification of microbial populations, gene clusters, or enzymes involved in wood decay as target of inhibitors/competitors.
Develop innovative coatings containing wood protecting microorganisms, biological metabolites, natural wood products or enzymes under low toxicity conditions.
Demonstration and safety validation of the protective solutions suitable for industrialization.
